The Power of Art: When It’s Hidden, When It’s Overshared, and When It Changes the World
Art has the power to inspire, challenge, and transform the way we see the world. But what happens when it is hidden away for decades, only to be discovered long after the artist is gone? And what about the opposite—when an artist’s work is so widely shared and commercialized that it loses its original meaning? The stories of Hilma af Klint and Vincent van Gogh offer two extreme examples of how an artist’s legacy can be shaped not only by their talent but by the way their work is treated by society.
The Hidden Genius: Hilma af Klint
For decades, the world believed that abstract art was pioneered by male artists like Wassily Kandinsky, Kazimir Malevich, and Piet Mondrian. But in 1986, a remarkable discovery changed everything. Hidden away in wooden boxes were over a thousand paintings by Hilma af Klint—works that predated Kandinsky’s earliest abstract paintings by years.
Hilma af Klint, a Swedish artist born in 1862, was deeply influenced by spiritualism and the idea of unseen realities. She believed her art was guided by forces beyond herself, and she created bold, geometric, and symbolic paintings unlike anything seen in her time. But instead of sharing her work with the world, she left instructions that it should remain hidden for at least 20 years after her death. Why? Perhaps she feared ridicule, or maybe she believed the world wasn’t ready for her vision.
In the end, the world wasn’t just not ready—it had completely rewritten history without her. Her work was only rediscovered in the late 20th century, and even now, she is still gaining the recognition she deserves. Her story raises an important question: What other groundbreaking artists have been forgotten or hidden because their work didn’t fit into the accepted narratives of their time?
The Overshared Artist: Vincent van Gogh
On the other end of the spectrum is Vincent van Gogh—an artist whose work is now everywhere. His paintings are printed on coffee mugs, t-shirts, phone cases, and even shower curtains. But in his lifetime, Van Gogh was almost completely unknown. He sold only a few paintings, struggled with mental health issues, and relied on financial support from his brother. He died believing he was a failure.
Today, Van Gogh’s name is synonymous with artistic genius, but his oversaturation in popular culture has led to something strange: his art is widely seen but not always felt. “Starry Night” or “Sunflowers” are so commercially reproduced that they often lose their emotional impact. They’ve become decorations rather than deeply personal expressions of an artist’s struggles and passions.
This raises another question: Can art lose its power when it becomes too commercialized? Van Gogh painted from a place of deep emotion and personal turmoil, yet much of his work is now consumed as trendy decor. Is there a way to share art widely without stripping it of its soul?
The Balance Between Secrecy and Exposure
Both Hilma af Klint and Vincent van Gogh show us that art exists in a delicate balance. If it’s hidden away for too long, history can erase the artist. If it’s overexposed, the meaning behind the work can be lost.
So where does that leave artists today? With the internet and social media, anyone can share their work instantly, but does that mean every piece of art gets the appreciation it deserves? Or does it become just another image in an endless scroll?
The Lesson for The Changerz
As changemakers, thinkers, and visionaries, we must ask ourselves:
- What art do we create that needs to be seen?
- What messages are we sending through what we share?
- How can we ensure that powerful work is appreciated, not just consumed?
Maybe the answer lies in intentionality—sharing art with purpose, protecting its deeper meaning, and ensuring that the right voices are heard at the right time. Because, as history shows us, the world is always in danger of overlooking brilliance or drowning it in noise.
What do you think? Have you ever held back from sharing something creative out of fear? Or have you seen something meaningful become overused to the point of losing its impact? Let’s start a conversation.

Imagine a Day in the Future: Canada, Strong and Self-Sufficient
⭐🌟⭐🕺Imagine a Day in the Future: Canada, Strong and Self-Sufficient⭐🌟⭐🌟
Setting the Scene:
It’s a crisp, sunny morning in 2035, and you wake up in your eco-friendly home—an energy-efficient building powered by solar panels and wind turbines. The coffee you brew comes from locally-grown beans, and your breakfast is made from ingredients sourced right from the community garden down the street.
You walk out the door and see people in your neighbourhood talking and sharing the goods and services they’ve created or exchanged. The local currency, known as the Maple, is widely used, and the bartering system is alive and well.
It’s a world where Canada is no longer reliant on distant countries for resources—we make it, we grow it, and we support each other. Your daily life shows the results of years of intentional work to create a self-sufficient, resilient country that thrives off its own resources and the strength of its communities.
Morning: Starting the Day with Local Energy and Products
As you step outside, you hear the soft hum of local renewable energy grids powering homes and businesses. Thanks to the massive investment in renewable energy infrastructure, the country is energy independent—using solar, wind, and hydropower to meet its needs.
You head to the community market, where the exchange of goods takes place. There’s a garden produce swap, where farmers, hobbyists, and home gardeners meet to trade tomatoes, herbs, eggs, and home-baked goods. You’re able to barter some freshly harvested herbs for a loaf of local sourdough.
In the market, a cooperative business is selling handmade goods, crafted from local materials by artisans. These artisans are paid in local currency or by bartering goods. The consumer-to-producer relationship is strong, and everyone is directly contributing to the local economy.
The local credit system, backed by government-sponsored digital Maple currency, allows you to transfer funds with ease, without the need for international banking systems.
Midday: Education, Healthcare, and Work – All Local and Accessible
As you walk to a nearby learning hub, you pass by children playing in the community park, designed with sustainable materials and powered by solar lights. The learning hub is a public, cooperative-run school where students focus on practical skills like sustainable farming, renewable energy, and local craftsmanship.
At lunchtime, you and your neighbours gather at a community-run café, which sources its produce from local co-ops and serves meals that follow the principles of permaculture. Everyone is engaged in conversation about how to further localize production and reduce waste. Over lunch, a local artist showcases a new piece of work inspired by community efforts.
The healthcare system is universal, and a nearby clinic is run by locally-trained doctors and nurses. You walk in for a quick check-up, and the clinic is well-stocked with domestically-produced medical supplies. There is no shortage because Canada has invested heavily in local production of medical devices and medicines.
Afternoon: Work, Local Business, and Community Empowerment
In the afternoon, you go to your workplace—a local co-op tech hub. Here, you’re working on a new sustainable construction project that will help expand affordable housing across the region. The materials are all sourced locally, and the design focuses on energy efficiency and environmental impact.
Your coworker is developing a small-scale wind turbine that could eventually power an entire neighborhood. It’s an example of how Canadian ingenuity has led to technological innovation in everything from green energy to eco-friendly transportation.
In a neighbouring office, a group is working on the next wave of locally-grown food technologies—from vertical farming systems to automated greenhouses. The country has become a leader in sustainable agriculture, and Canadians are proud of their food sovereignty.
In every corner of your community, people are working together, pooling resources, and supporting local businesses. You hear about a new local credit union that is financing small-scale, community-run projects in your neighborhood. The goal: to keep money circulating within Canada, strengthening local economies and ensuring that wealth stays within communities.
Evening: Social Connections, Entertainment, and a Stronger Future
As evening falls, you and your neighbors gather for a community meal in the central square—a celebration of locally sourced food, prepared by members of the community. As the sun sets, people come together for a cultural festival where local musicians, artists, and performers showcase their talents. The event is fully sponsored by local businesses, meaning no outside corporations are involved.
You relax, knowing your government continues to focus on domestic policy, ensuring that basic services like healthcare, education, and affordable housing remain publicly funded and available to everyone. Your local education system continues to grow, with an emphasis on preparing future generations to lead sustainable, self-sufficient lives.
In this future Canada, your day-to-day life is interwoven with a stronger, locally-driven economy that relies on Canadian innovation, community collaboration, and a focus on self-sufficiency. The country has not only survived but has thrived in the face of global challenges by supporting one another and putting local needs first.
Timeline: Building Canada’s Stronger Future

Stranger Than Truth and Fiction: A Call for Change in Canada
Stranger Than Truth and Fiction: A Call for Change in Canada
In recent years, it’s become clearer than ever that we are living in a world where truth is often manipulated for political and economic gain. From corporate greed to environmental exploitation, the powerful are finding new ways to shape reality—sometimes at the cost of the very people and communities that should be protected. But as troubling as this might sound, it also presents an opportunity for change.
There are clear signs that the systems we have in place aren't working for the majority of people, but we have the power to make a difference. Canada, like many nations, has a long history of systemic injustice, corporate manipulation, and environmental negligence. From the treatment of Indigenous peoples and the destruction of their lands to flawed policies that harm the most vulnerable, it’s time to reflect on what we can do to fix this broken system.
Promote Transparency and Accountability
The need for transparency in both government and corporate sectors has never been more urgent. Too often, the public is left in the dark about how decisions are made or where resources are allocated, allowing misinformation and manipulation to thrive.
Action Step:
Demand more transparency from local governments or businesses by submitting public records requests or participating in town halls and public forums. Ask questions about how decisions are made and where public funds are allocated.
Strengthening Indigenous Land Rights
Much of British Columbia, and Canada in general, rests on unceded Indigenous lands. These territories were never legally surrendered, yet have been exploited by the government and corporate interests for centuries. It’s time we listen to Indigenous communities and fight for the protection of their lands and rights.
Action Step:
Support Indigenous-led organizations and movements by learning about the land back movement or signing petitions that advocate for the protection of unceded land. Amplify Indigenous voices on social media to raise awareness.
Environmental Protection Laws
Canada’s relationship with its environment has been a complicated one—especially when it comes to practices like fish farming, which has been harmful to ecosystems. The environmental impact of industries must be held in check with strict regulations that protect nature and its inhabitants.
Action Step:
Reduce your own environmental footprint by supporting sustainable businesses, reducing plastic use, and advocating for better waste management practices in your community. Write to your local representatives to ask about their stance on fish farming and environmental protection.
Implement Free Public Services
Imagine a world where public services—like transportation—are free for everyone. It’s a concept that seems radical but would have profound effects on access, fairness, and reducing our collective carbon footprint. Free public transit would reduce inequalities, improve mobility, and lessen environmental harm.
Action Step:
Support campaigns for universal transit by writing to local leaders, joining advocacy groups, or participating in petitions calling for free public transportation in your area. Encourage others to spread the word and share their support.
Redistribute Wealth and Resources
The growing wealth disparity between the rich and the poor has made it more difficult for everyday citizens to access the basic services and opportunities they deserve. Tax reform, progressive wages, and income redistribution can help correct these imbalances.
Action Step:
Vote with your wallet by supporting businesses that are ethical and fair-wage employers. You can also get involved in advocating for policies that address income inequality, such as raising the minimum wage, through petitions or contacting your representatives.
Cultural and Social Integration
The diverse communities that make up Canada have often been treated as separate and unequal, with Indigenous peoples, immigrants, and marginalized groups bearing the brunt of historical injustices. Integration doesn’t just mean coexistence—it’s about celebrating diversity and fostering mutual respect.
Action Step:
Start a community dialogue or cultural exchange program in your local area. This could involve hosting an event or creating a space where people from different backgrounds, including Indigenous communities, can share their stories and experiences.
End Historical Injustices
The legacy of colonization still affects many Indigenous communities today. Whether through land theft, forced assimilation, or systemic violence, the injustice remains—and it’s up to all of us to create a path toward restitution and healing.
Action Step:
Educate yourself and others about the history of colonization and its impact on Indigenous communities. Share resources, such as books, documentaries, or articles, that highlight the injustices and ways we can work toward healing.
Empower Local Communities
Grassroots movements have historically been the backbone of social change. Empowering local communities to take charge of their own futures is crucial for ensuring real, lasting progress. Whether through volunteer work, grassroots organizing, or public advocacy, we all have a role to play.
Action Step:
Volunteer or donate to grassroots organizations that focus on advocacy for marginalized groups. If you can, join community meetings or local activism efforts, even if just to listen and learn from those most affected.
Flipping the Script: Honest Change Starts with Us
The world is changing—and it’s clear that the systems that have existed for so long are not working for the majority of people. From the manipulation of truth to environmental exploitation, we must acknowledge the realities of our time and find ways to create an equitable, just society.
This doesn’t have to be a distant dream. It starts with each of us taking small steps to hold those in power accountable, supporting marginalized communities, and demanding transparency. Change may not be easy, but it is possible. By taking these actions, we can begin to reshape the future—not just for ourselves but for the generations that will follow.
Let’s start today.
Stranger Than Truth: When Fiction Becomes the New Reality
In today’s world, we often hear phrases like “alternative facts,” “fake news,” and “post-truth” tossed around, blurring the lines between truth and falsehood. But this isn't a new phenomenon. Throughout history, there have been powerful figures and regimes that have manipulated the truth to maintain control, shape public perception, and suppress dissent. These moments are stranger than any fiction because they involve not just the twisting of narratives but the creation of entirely new realities, often with devastating consequences.
The Power of Propaganda: History’s Greatest Lies
The manipulation of truth is not a modern invention. Totalitarian regimes, from Nazi Germany to the Soviet Union, have used state-controlled media and propaganda to craft narratives that suited their political agendas.
Joseph Goebbels, the Nazi Minister of Propaganda, famously said, “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.” This technique, known as the "Big Lie," was central to the Nazi regime’s control over the masses. The idea was simple: Repetition made falsehoods believable, and through relentless propaganda, the regime could convince people of a warped version of reality. The dehumanization of Jews and minorities was one such narrative that became ingrained in the public consciousness, leading to horrific consequences.
Similarly, in the Soviet Union, under Joseph Stalin, the government meticulously crafted a version of the truth that erased dissent. When famines, purges, and political repression took place, they were either downplayed or erased entirely from the official narrative. In this way, the Soviet leadership created a truth that suited their needs and kept the population in check, stifling any challenge to their power.
The "Big Lie" in American History
Closer to home, there have been instances in U.S. history where the government has manipulated the truth for political gain. One of the most notable examples is the lead-up to the Vietnam War. The Gulf of Tonkin incident was a fabricated story that was used to justify escalated military action in Vietnam. It was later revealed that the incident was either exaggerated or completely false, but by then, the groundwork for the war was already laid.
Similarly, the Iraq War of 2003 was framed by the U.S. government as a necessary response to Iraq’s supposed possession of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs). The media echoed this narrative, but once the war began, it became clear that Iraq did not possess such weapons. The "truth" that had been peddled to the public fell apart, yet the war continued, leaving many to question how the truth had been manipulated in the first place.
Modern Manipulation: Social Media and the Age of "Fake News"
In the digital age, the battle over truth is more complex than ever. Social media platforms, such as X (formerly Twitter), have become battlegrounds for the shaping of reality. Politicians and public figures use these platforms to bypass traditional media outlets, presenting their own version of events directly to the public. This can be a double-edged sword: while it allows for more transparency, it also opens the door to unchecked misinformation.
Former President Donald Trump’s frequent use of social media, particularly his claim of “fake news” when faced with unfavorable reporting, is a prime example. By labeling dissenting narratives as fake, he was able to create an alternative truth for his followers—one that often diverged sharply from reality. This rhetoric has continued to thrive in the media ecosystem, where people can find like-minded communities that reinforce their beliefs, regardless of the facts.
Truth or Fiction?
In all of these instances, the question remains: What happens when fiction becomes reality? History shows us that the line between truth and fiction can be manipulated, stretched, and bent until it’s nearly unrecognizable. Whether it's through propaganda, selective reporting, or outright lies, the ability to shape a narrative is a powerful tool in the hands of those seeking to control the public’s perception.
In an age of digital connectivity, where misinformation spreads at lightning speed, it’s more important than ever to be skeptical and vigilant about the information we consume. Truth, as we know it, can be stranger than fiction. But it’s up to us to navigate the noise, separate fact from fiction, and demand accountability from those who wield the power to shape our understanding of the world.

Dear Vancouver’s Wealthiest Residents,
I hope this message finds you well. I am writing today not to dwell on the success you’ve achieved, but to urge you to consider the struggles many of us face each and every day in this city—the same city that has allowed you to thrive.
As the wealth gap continues to grow, many of us are finding it increasingly difficult to meet basic needs, let alone achieve the opportunities that you have had the privilege of enjoying. We are caught in a system that is failing to address the ever-rising cost of living, the scarcity of affordable housing, and the burden of inaccessible, unaffordable public transit. These are not just minor inconveniences—they are serious barriers that affect our lives, our families, and our communities.
You have had access to the best education, housing, and transportation, but many of us struggle to get by, whether it’s commuting to work, accessing basic services, or providing for our loved ones. The transit system, one of the fundamental aspects of an equitable city, has become unaffordable for many. For those of us on lower or fixed incomes, the cost of transit has become yet another heavy burden.
You have the power to change this. Vancouver has welcomed immense wealth, and it is only right that we ask the same city to take care of those who are suffering. You are in a unique position to support efforts to provide free or subsidized transit, not as a handout, but as a fundamental right for every resident. Making public transit accessible to all would not only reduce congestion, lower emissions, and create a more sustainable city—it would give all of us the dignity we deserve.
The wealth in this city is growing, but so is the divide. It doesn’t have to be this way. If you continue to live in this city, then I ask that you take responsibility for all of us, not just for your own comfort. It would not hurt you to care for those who helped build the very city you now call home.
Invest in our future by ensuring that affordable transit is available to everyone who needs it, and show that Vancouver is not just a place for the privileged but a community that looks after all its people.
Sincerely,
Tina Winterlik aka Zipolita
Holocaust Memorial Day: A Reflection on Loss, Injustice, and the Fight for Love
Holocaust Memorial Day: A Reflection on Loss, Injustice, and the Fight for Love
Today, we honor Holocaust Memorial Day—a time to remember the unimaginable suffering of the past and reflect on the injustices that still plague our world.
As a young girl, I read Anne Frank’s diary, and her words left an indelible mark on me. Her courage, her hope, and her humanity shone through even in the darkest times. It broke my heart, yet it also ignited something in me—a need to stand against hate and oppression. Today, though, it feels like people have become numb to suffering. Perhaps the isolation of COVID-19 did that, or maybe it’s the overwhelming nature of constant tragedies in the world.
But we must remember: we have a choice. If we want a future for our children, the choice is yours. Choose love.
Love is all we need.
The Beatles sang it. Bob Marley lived it. David Bowie, the Eurythmics, and countless other artists have carried this message through their music and art. Art has the power to break through the numbness, to touch hearts, to heal wounds, and to inspire action.
Now is the time to fight back—with art, with love, and with courage.
#FightBackWithArt
#WarriorUpWithArt
In the face of hate, we must create. In the face of oppression, we must rise. In the face of apathy, we must inspire. Art is a weapon of truth and love, and through it, we can build a world where such horrors are not repeated.
Today, as we honor the victims and survivors of the Holocaust, let us also commit to action. Choose love. Choose art. Choose to make a difference.
Once Upon a Time in a City by the Sea
Once upon a time, in a beautiful city between the mountains and the sea, people’s lives sparkled as brightly as the jewels they chased—or so it seemed.
In this city, there were places where people bought yoga clothes that cost as much as a month’s rent, shiny red cars that roared louder than their owners’ kindness, and houses so big and empty they echoed like a broken heart. These treasures weren’t just objects; they became symbols of success. But the price of these treasures wasn’t measured in dollars alone—it was measured in the growing cracks of the city’s soul.
Just beyond the glitter, there was another part of the city, hidden in shadows. On the Downtown Eastside, people lived in tents or huddled in doorways. Some were there because they couldn’t pay for a home, while others had lost themselves in the haze of addiction. Many didn’t feel valuable because they didn’t have the clothes, the cars, or the big houses.
Children went to school hungry, their bellies aching as they watched others unwrap shiny lunches. Women stayed in unsafe homes because they had no money to leave, their voices silenced by fear. And many people drank or used drugs to forget the pain of being invisible in a city that seemed to only care about things that sparkled.
The Race for More
One day, a young girl walked with her mother past the glittering shops and shiny cars of Kitsilano. She tugged on her mother’s sleeve and asked, “Why do some people buy cars that cost more than a house while others sleep outside? Why do we walk past them like they don’t exist?”
Her mother hesitated. “Because we’ve been told that having more means being more,” she said quietly. “But I don’t think that’s true.”
Far from the city, there were people buying up the homes, not to live in, but to leave them empty as investments. The houses stayed dark and cold, while people in the city lived in cars, in shelters, or on friends’ couches. No one in power seemed to care—until there was a crisis. But by then, it was too late to help the ones who needed it most.
A Hidden Kindness
In the midst of the chaos, some people began to see the truth. They noticed how the city’s hunger for luxury was eating away at its heart.
A man who once dreamed of a Ferrari began driving an old car, donating the money he saved to a shelter instead. A woman who had saved for a diamond ring used her money to feed hungry kids at a local school.
And the little girl who asked her mother about the people sleeping outside grew up. She didn’t care for diamonds or shiny cars. Instead, she spoke out, reminding people that the city wasn’t just for the rich—it was for everyone.
The Elder’s Warning
One day, a wise elder spoke to the people of the city. “We’ve lost our way,” they said. “We think the things we own will make us happy, but they can never love us back. True wealth is not in what you wear or drive—it’s in what you give and how you care for those around you.
“When we ignore the hungry and the homeless, we crack the soul of our city. And if we do not heal those cracks, our city will crumble.”
The Moral
Not everyone listened, but some did. And those who heard the elder’s words began to act. They stopped chasing things and started building community. They helped those without homes find shelter. They made sure no child went hungry. They spoke up for women who had no voice.
The city didn’t change overnight. But as the kindness grew, the cracks in its soul began to heal. And those who once felt invisible became part of the city’s story again, a story of hope, compassion, and a reminder that no treasure is brighter than love and humanity.

We’re Facing a Threat to Democracy – But We Can Fight Back
Right now, it feels like everything is falling apart. With big influences like Elon Musk trying to control elections and people like Pierre Poilievre pushing for change that harms our communities, we’re facing a serious threat to democracy. But we don’t have to give up. We can fight back—just like Robert Reich suggests—and we can do it in a way that focuses on what truly matters: housing, food security, and the climate.
1. Don’t Panic – Change Takes Time
Even when bad leaders like Trump or Poilievre push to take control, it doesn’t happen instantly. Countries like Turkey and Hungary took years to break down their systems, and even though the threat is real, the systems we have in place—like local governments, courts, and free speech—will slow it down. We have more power than we realize.
2. Stay Connected – We Need to Organize
It’s tempting to shut off the news or hide away when things are tough. But that’s not the solution. We need to stay connected, to share ideas, and organize for what matters most: housing, food security, and addressing climate change. We can’t let these issues be ignored by people who just want power. We’ve seen people in other countries come together to fight back, and we can do the same.
3. Don’t Worry About the Arguments
Yes, there’s a lot of fighting within political parties right now, and it can seem like it’s getting us nowhere. But honestly, it’s bizarre to see so much disrespect and childish behavior from supposed “professionals.” These people are meant to be leaders, and instead, they’re bickering like schoolchildren while the real issues—like homelessness, food insecurity, and climate change—go unresolved. The debates may be messy, but we need them to figure out how to move forward and make real change.
4. We Need a Leader Who Cares About Our Communities
To fight back, we need a leader who understands that the most important issues are not just about economic growth but about people’s basic needs—safe housing, healthy food, and protecting our environment. Indigenous knowledge teaches us that we must live in balance with the land, care for the Earth, and respect all living beings. We need a leader who not only speaks to these issues but also listens to Indigenous communities, who’ve been warning us for generations about the importance of caring for the land.
5. Focus on Housing, Food, and Climate – Not Just Economics
We’ve been stuck in a mindset that values profits over people for too long. Focusing only on economics has led us to the crisis we face today—homelessness, food insecurity, and climate disasters. It’s time to change that. We need to push for affordable housing, sustainable food systems, and solutions to climate change. These are the issues that truly matter to people’s well-being, not just the economy.
6. Keep Hope – We Can Overcome This
It might seem like the odds are against us, but we have powerful systems of governance, like free speech and the rule of law, that will keep pushing back. And we have a rich tradition of resilience—especially from Indigenous communities who have been fighting to protect their land and culture for centuries. When we listen to Indigenous knowledge and work together, we can overcome even the toughest challenges. The mistakes of autocrats like Trump or Poilievre will catch up with them.
In short, we’re facing a serious challenge, but if we stay focused on what truly matters—housing, food security, and climate action—and learn from Indigenous wisdom, we can push back. We can’t let single-minded power grabs take away the things that make us strong. Let’s organize, stay hopeful, and fight for a future that works for everyone.
Reconnecting in a Disconnected World"
It’s 2025, and connection feels harder than ever. Despite living in a world where technology can link us instantly, people are feeling lonelier, more divided, and disconnected—from each other, from their communities, and even from themselves. Whether it’s the ripple effects of the pandemic, the pressures of modern living, or the constant noise of social media, we’ve lost something essential. But all is not lost—we can rebuild connection.
Why Are We So Disconnected?
- Economic Struggles: High rents, rising food costs, and financial stress leave little room for meaningful connection. People are in survival mode.
- Addiction and Escape: Alcohol, vaping, and Big Pharma create emotional distance, while grief from the fentanyl crisis leaves deep scars.
- Generational Disconnect: Younger generations face uncertainty, while older generations grapple with illnesses like Alzheimer’s. This growing divide makes understanding harder.
- The Argument Culture: Conversations, whether online or in-person, often feel like battles instead of spaces for understanding.
- The Loss of Community Spaces: As public spaces shrink, opportunities for spontaneous connection diminish.
The Cost of Disconnection
Disconnection fuels loneliness, anxiety, and resentment. It weakens families, fractures friendships, and isolates us within our struggles. Without connection, it becomes harder to empathize with others’ pain or recognize their humanity.
Steps to Reconnect
1. Start Small: Listen Without Judgment
When someone shares their struggles, resist the urge to debate or problem-solve. Instead, just listen. A simple “I hear you” or “That sounds really hard” can go a long way.
2. Rebuild Community Spaces
Look for ways to create or join spaces that foster connection. Community gardens, public art projects, and free libraries are great examples of places where people can come together.
3. Embrace Vulnerability
Be honest about your struggles, and invite others to do the same. Vulnerability is the foundation of real connection.
4. Create Together
Art, music, and storytelling are universal languages. Organizing mural projects, writing workshops, or community art nights can help bridge divides.
5. Focus on Shared Goals
Working together on a cause—whether it’s feeding the hungry, cleaning up a park, or advocating for social change—builds bonds that transcend differences.
6. Reclaim the Real World
Put down the screens and meet people face-to-face. Even small changes, like hosting a potluck or joining a local club, can make a difference.
7. Advocate for Systemic Change
We can’t ignore the structural barriers that fuel disconnection. Push for affordable housing, better mental health services, and addiction support in your community.

A Vision for the Future
Imagine a world where neighborhoods feel like villages, where murals tell the stories of resilience, and where conversations are filled with empathy instead of conflict. It’s possible, but it requires all of us to show up—not just for ourselves but for each other.
What Can You Do Today?
- Talk to a neighbor. Ask how they’re doing—really.
- Create a space for connection. It could be as simple as a shared meal or as ambitious as a mural project.
- Share your story. Vulnerability is contagious.
Let’s stop waiting for someone else to fix things. The power to reconnect starts with us.
What steps will you take to bring connection back into your life? Share your ideas in the comments below or join the conversation on social media.
Bombarded by Ads: Taking Back Our Public Spaces and Platforms
From bus stops to SkyTrain stations, to every ad on YouTube pushing diapers, drugs, or get-rich-quick schemes, we’re drowning in advertising. These messages aren’t harmless—they’re carefully designed to manipulate, sell, and profit, often at the expense of our well-being.
Big Pharma ads, in particular, are troubling. They prey on fears around health and aging, targeting not just older adults but their families as well. Meanwhile, social media algorithms feed us more of the same, locking us into cycles of fear-based consumerism.
And public spaces, which should be for everyone, are now plastered with ads that no one asked for. Even when we step outside, there’s no escaping the noise.
What Can We Do?
1. Demand Accountability from Ad Companies
Companies like Lamar, which manage bus stop and transit ads, need to hear from us. If they’re profiting from ad space in public areas, they should be held to higher ethical standards. Let’s demand they stop accepting misleading or harmful ads.
- Who to contact: Identify the ad agencies working with your city (like Lamar) and send letters or petitions to hold them accountable.
- Transparency: Push for laws requiring companies to disclose how they vet ads and to ban manipulative content.
2. Rethink the Role of Ads in Public Spaces
We need to reclaim our streets and transit systems from becoming platforms for corporate manipulation.
- Advocate for ad-free zones: Public spaces like transit stations, parks, and schools should be free from ads altogether.
- Promote community content: Replace commercial ads with public art, community announcements, or educational content that benefits society.
3. Pressure Platforms Like YouTube
YouTube is a constant ad machine, targeting viewers with products they might not need—especially older adults who may already feel isolated or overwhelmed by technology.
- Demand better algorithms: Advocate for platforms to develop stricter ad filters and give users more control over the types of ads they see.
- Ad opt-outs: Push for affordable ad-free versions for all, not just premium services locked behind a paywall.
Reaching Out to Government and Policy Makers
We need systemic change to address the damage ads are doing to our society. Here’s how we can push for it:
- Petition your representatives: Advocate for tighter regulations on advertising, especially for health products and online scams.
- Media literacy programs: Ask governments to fund education campaigns that teach people how to critically analyze ads and online content.
- Advertising caps: Push for limits on how much ad space can exist in public areas and digital platforms.
- Public inquiries: Demand investigations into the ethical implications of excessive advertising, with a focus on Big Pharma, tech giants, and ad agencies.
A Plague on Our Minds and Our Spaces
Unchecked advertising has become a plague—manipulating our fears, confusing our elders, and turning every moment of our lives into a sales pitch. But we don’t have to accept this as the status quo.
If we band together—sharing knowledge, demanding change, and taking action—we can reclaim our public spaces, our screens, and our peace of mind. Ads shouldn’t control our lives. Let’s take a stand against the relentless tide of manipulation and build a world where people, not profits, come first.
Saving Each Other
Saving Each Other: How Grandchildren Can Protect Their Grandparents and Parents
Dear Young People,
You may not realize it yet, but you hold the power to protect your families in ways they might not even understand. Your grandparents and parents grew up in a world where trust in media and institutions was stronger, and technology wasn’t the confusing beast it is today. Many are being misled by fake news, manipulative ads, and online scams. It’s not their fault—they didn’t grow up with the internet the way you did.
But you can help them.
How to Save Your Loved Ones
1. Teach Them About Online Dangers
- Explain the basics: Show them how to spot fake ads and phishing scams.
- Talk about algorithms: Help them understand why they keep seeing certain types of content and how it’s designed to manipulate them.
- Install protections: Set up ad blockers, spam filters, and strong passwords for them.
2. Fact-Check Together
- If they tell you something that sounds off, don’t dismiss it. Instead, help them look it up together. Show them how to use reliable sources like government websites or fact-checking platforms.
3. Encourage Conversations, Not Arguments
- Approach them with patience and love. If they believe something you know is wrong, ask them why they think that. Then gently introduce new information.
4. Help Them Stay Connected
- Loneliness makes people more vulnerable to manipulation. Encourage your grandparents and parents to spend time with friends, join local activities, or connect with trusted online communities.
5. Empower Them to Question Everything
- Show them it’s okay to doubt what they see online. Share the mantra: “If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.”
Building Bridges, Not Walls
Imagine a future where grandchildren guide their grandparents away from scams and ads, where parents learn from their kids how to navigate the digital world, and where families grow stronger together instead of being divided by misinformation.
This isn’t just about protecting them; it’s about creating a chain of wisdom that flows both ways. They have life experience and lessons to share, and you have the tools to help them navigate this new digital era. Together, you can save each other.
Tools to Make It Happen
- Workshops for Families: Create safe spaces where kids can teach older generations about digital literacy.
- Simple Guides: Develop printable or video resources for seniors on avoiding online scams and spotting fake ads.
- Community Efforts: Encourage schools, libraries, and community centers to host intergenerational tech help sessions.
This is the Future We’re Fighting For
When you protect your grandparents and parents, you’re not just saving them—you’re saving a part of yourself, too. You’re building a future where families are united, informed, and strong enough to resist the forces trying to tear them apart.

Sacrilege in Action: The Hypocrisy of Trump’s Christian Rhetoric
(I know what your thinking, is she really going to go down that rabbit hole?
Damn Right!)
Sacrilege in Action: The Hypocrisy of Trump’s Christian Rhetoric
Growing up Catholic, I was taught that faith was about love, compassion, and service to others. But as I got older, I saw the hypocrisy, judgment, and power plays overshadowing those ideals—even in spaces meant to be sacred. Hurtful words from nuns pushed me to leave the Church. As time passed, I began to connect more deeply with my Indigenous roots, which emphasized respect for all life, care for the earth, and the interconnection of all beings.
Over the years, my studies in psychology, anthropology, geography, and cultural geography, alongside my travels and life experiences, shaped my perspective on humanity, faith, and justice. At my age, I’ve seen enough cycles of history to recognize patterns—patterns of greed, division, and the misuse of power that keep repeating. Watching the rise of Donald Trump and the role of religious voters in his ascent felt like a cruel irony. Those who claimed to follow Jesus—a figure who stood for love, humility, and compassion—chose a leader whose actions betray every teaching they supposedly hold sacred.
I’m not sure anyone is listening now, but one day, I hope these words—and words like them—will matter.
You Cannot Claim to Follow Jesus While Betraying His Teachings
If you claim to follow Jesus, how do you reconcile these glaring contradictions?
1. Turning Your Back on the Poor: Jesus championed the poor, yet Trump’s policies prioritized the wealthy, cutting social programs and deepening inequality.
2. Rejecting the Stranger: The Bible calls on us to welcome the stranger, yet Trump’s administration enacted draconian immigration policies, separating families and turning away refugees.
3. Destroying Creation: God’s creation is sacred, yet environmental protections were rolled back, and climate change was denied, endangering the planet.
4. Sowing Division: Jesus preached unity and love, yet Trump’s rhetoric inflamed divisions, exploiting racial tensions and xenophobia.
5. Glorifying Wealth and Power: The love of money is the root of all evil, but Trumpism idolizes wealth and power while neglecting the vulnerable.
6. Promoting Violence: Jesus said, “Those who live by the sword will die by the sword,” yet militarism and the glorification of arms were hallmarks of Trump’s policies.
7. Eroding Truth: Jesus stood for honesty and integrity, but Trump’s administration became synonymous with lies and propaganda.
8. Mocking Humility: Humility is a cornerstone of Christian teaching, yet arrogance and self-glorification defined Trump’s leadership.
9. Exploiting Faith: Religious symbols and rhetoric were cynically used to gain political power, devoid of genuine belief or adherence to Christian principles.
10. Dismissing Justice: Jesus called for justice and fairness, yet Trump’s policies undermined the rule of law and marginalized the most vulnerable.
These betrayals of Christian doctrine go hand in hand with violations of the Ten Commandments:
You shall not have other gods before me: Trumpism’s idolization of power and wealth is a modern form of idolatry.
You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain: Religious rhetoric was weaponized for political gain.
Honor your father and mother: Policies that harmed families and communities dishonor the elders and ancestors who built the way.
You shall not kill: From environmental destruction to the normalization of violence, the sanctity of life was disregarded.
You shall not steal: Corporate greed and policies that enriched the elite at the expense of the poor are forms of theft.
You shall not bear false witness: The relentless assault on truth and the spread of misinformation violated this commandment.
Trumpism and The Seven Indigenous Teachings
As someone who has embraced The Seven Teachings of love, respect, courage, honesty, wisdom, humility, and truth, I see how Trump’s leadership and the actions of his supporters violated these sacred values.
Love: Instead of fostering love, there was hate. Instead of caring for others, there was selfishness.
Respect: Respect for the earth, for diversity, for humanity—gone.
Courage: True courage is standing up for what is right, not inciting fear or clinging to power.
Honesty: Lies and propaganda were the currency of Trump’s administration.
Wisdom: Ignoring science and silencing Indigenous voices is the opposite of wisdom.
Humility: Arrogance replaced humility, leading to policies of exploitation.
Truth: Without truth, there is no justice. And without justice, there is no peace.
A Reflection on My Journey
As I write this, I reflect on my travels, my education, and my ancestors. I’ve walked through lands touched by history, witnessed different cultures, and seen the consequences of greed and division. My own family is a mix of Catholic and Christian beliefs, but my heart is Indigenous. I’ve seen the damage colonization and religious hypocrisy have done—not just to Indigenous peoples, but to the very spirit of humanity
We live in a world where people claim to follow sacred teachings while destroying everything those teachings stand for. It’s hard to watch, but I keep writing and speaking because maybe, just maybe, someone will hear. Maybe one day, these words will help others see the contradictions and work to change them.
A Call to Reflection
If you voted for Trump in the name of faith, I ask you to reflect deeply. Look at the consequences of that choice. Look at the harm done to the poor, the immigrant, the environment, and society itself. Is this what Jesus would have wanted?
Faith is not about power or politics; it’s about love, compassion, and justice. Whether you follow Jesus, the Seven Teachings, or another spiritual path, we must return to these values if we are to heal the damage done.
Let us be changerZ. Let us build a world based on love, respect, and truth. And let us remember that the earth, our ancestors, and future generations are watching.

Ground Control to Elon: Earth Needs You More Than Mars
Ground Control to Elon: Earth Needs You More Than Mars
Elton John’s Rocket Man gave us a hauntingly beautiful vision of life beyond Earth. One verse stands out, even decades later:
"And all this science, I don't understand
It's just my job five days a week
A rocket man, a rocket man.
And I think it’s gonna be a long, long time…"
Elton wasn’t writing about Elon Musk, but the parallels are hard to ignore. Musk’s relentless pursuit of Mars colonization feels eerily like the Rocket Man’s lonely, pointless journey. After all, as Elton sings: "There's no one there to raise them if you did."
David Bowie’s Is There Life on Mars? deepened the space-age existentialism. His lyrics question whether humanity’s obsession with progress blinds us to the absurdity of it all. Bowie’s Major Tom—lost in the void—is a stark metaphor for what happens when we abandon connection and responsibility in favor of ambition.
Elon’s Mars Obsession: What’s the Point?
Elon Musk frames Mars as humanity’s “Plan B.” But let’s be real—what kind of backup plan involves terraforming a barren wasteland while the home planet burns? The irony is painful. Instead of channeling billions into preserving Earth, Musk is chasing a sci-fi dream that offers little but hubris.
What’s the ultimate goal here? A shiny new colony for the ultra-rich while Earth’s ecosystems collapse? Will Mars be a sanctuary, or just another monument to human greed and shortsightedness? Bowie’s question echoes louder than ever: “Is there life on Mars?”
The Real Frontier
If Elon’s mission is to secure humanity’s future, the real challenge isn’t millions of miles away—it’s right here. Earth is the only planet we know of that sustains life. It’s not just a home; it’s a miracle. But instead of fixing what we’ve broken, we’re dreaming of escape.
As Elton’s Rocket Man reminds us: “It’s cold as hell.” Mars offers no warmth, no nurture, no life. Earth is alive, but it won’t stay that way if we don’t act.
Ground Control to Elon
We don’t need more rockets. We need solutions for climate change, equitable societies, and a sustainable future. Major Tom, Rocket Man, and the rest of us are calling:
Restore Earth before you run from it.
Focus on fixing the mess instead of exporting it to another planet.
Because if there’s no one to raise them on Mars, what are we even doing?
The Power of Truth: Standing Against Suppression
The Power of Truth: Standing Against Suppression
In a world where powerful figures and systems seem to wield unchecked influence, the fight for truth has never been more urgent—or more difficult. Recent events highlight a troubling reality: when individuals raise their voices against manipulation, whether in politics, media, or technology, they are often silenced, ignored, or discredited.
This post is a call to action—not just to acknowledge these injustices but to take meaningful steps to challenge them.
Gestures with Meaning
When influential figures make deliberate gestures or statements that echo dark chapters of history, it’s not just a coincidence—it’s a signal. These actions matter because they can normalize harmful ideologies, embolden dangerous groups, and undermine efforts to promote justice and equity.
If Elon Musk, or any public figure, intentionally performs gestures that evoke Nazi symbolism, it’s a stark reminder of how historical narratives can be weaponized in subtle yet powerful ways. Such actions demand accountability—not just dismissive comments or vague denials.
The Role of Algorithms in Elections
The idea that algorithms may be influencing elections is no longer the stuff of conspiracy theories. Social media platforms, powered by opaque algorithms, shape public opinion in ways that often go unnoticed. When algorithms prioritize divisive content, suppress certain voices, or promote narratives favoring specific individuals or parties, democracy itself is at risk.
Elon Musk’s prediction that Pierre Poilievre will become Prime Minister raises important questions. Are these outcomes being shaped by genuine democratic processes, or are they the product of algorithmic engineering and manipulation? If the latter, then it’s not just our elections being manipulated—it’s our collective future.
The Crushing Weight of Suppression
For those who speak truth to power, the obstacles are immense. Censorship, smear campaigns, and outright dismissal are common tools used to silence dissent. The voices of the good are drowned out, not because they lack merit, but because they lack the resources and platforms of those they oppose.
But this is no reason to give up. On the contrary, it’s a reason to fight harder.
What Can Be Done?
1. Raise Awareness:
Share credible information widely. Use your voice to shine a light on issues that matter, whether it’s on your blog, social media, or within your community.
2. Demand Transparency:
Call for accountability from public figures, governments, and tech companies. Transparency in algorithms and election processes is non-negotiable in a functioning democracy.
3. Organize and Collaborate:
Join forces with like-minded individuals and organizations. Collective action has the power to create change.
4. Educate Others:
Teach others to recognize and resist manipulation. The more informed people are, the harder it becomes for bad actors to succeed.
A Call to Action
Now is the time to act. History has shown us the consequences of silence, apathy, and ignorance. By standing together, speaking out, and refusing to back down, we can challenge the forces that seek to suppress truth and justice.
The road ahead may be daunting, but it is one worth traveling—for ourselves, for our communities, and for future generations.
Understanding the Hidden Dangers of Climate Change: The Cold Crisis
When we think of climate change, we often picture sweltering heat, raging wildfires, or devastating floods. But there’s another side to climate change that’s less talked about: the cold. Yes, even as global temperatures rise, unusual and extreme cold snaps are becoming part of our new reality, bringing unimaginable hardship, particularly to those most vulnerable.
Why Is It So Cold if the Earth Is Warming?
Climate change doesn't just mean warming—it means disruption. The warming of the Arctic is causing the polar vortex, a band of cold air that typically stays around the North Pole, to weaken and wobble. This "wobble" allows icy air to escape and descend much farther south than usual, bringing frigid temperatures to places unaccustomed to dealing with them.
For example:
- Florida recently saw snow, a rare event for the Sunshine State.
- Mexico is experiencing unusually cold temperatures, leaving many struggling without proper heating infrastructure.
The Silent Crisis: Frostbite and Amputations
Extreme cold is more than an inconvenience—it’s deadly. Frostbite, a condition that occurs when skin and underlying tissues freeze, is a life-altering consequence of exposure to freezing temperatures. Frostbite primarily affects exposed and less-insulated parts of the body, such as fingers, toes, noses, and ears.
The Human Toll
In Manitoba, Canada, the crisis is stark. Homeless individuals who are exposed to subzero temperatures without adequate shelter often suffer severe frostbite. For many, this leads to amputations of fingers, toes, or even entire limbs. These stories are not isolated incidents—they are becoming alarmingly common as cold snaps increase in intensity and frequency.
Frostbite progresses in stages:
- Frostnip: The skin turns red and may tingle, but there’s no permanent damage.
- Superficial Frostbite: The skin becomes hard and pale, and ice crystals may form in tissues beneath the surface.
- Severe Frostbite: Tissue dies, leading to gangrene and, in many cases, the need for amputation.
A Preventable Tragedy
Many of these injuries could be avoided with adequate shelters, warm clothing, and public awareness. But in areas unprepared for extreme cold or where resources are stretched thin, the most vulnerable are left to fend for themselves.
Preparing for the Cold Crisis
As we face a world of climate extremes, we must prepare for both heatwaves and cold spells. Here’s how:
- Expand Emergency Shelters: Communities need more warming centers and shelters for those without stable housing, especially during cold weather.
- Distribute Essential Supplies: Governments and nonprofits should prioritize distributing thermal blankets, gloves, insulated boots, and hats to at-risk populations.
- Educate About Frostbite Prevention: Teach people how to protect themselves from frostbite by layering clothing, covering exposed skin, and recognizing early symptoms.
- Strengthen Infrastructure: Build and retrofit homes and community spaces to withstand extreme cold, even in traditionally warmer climates.
What You Can Do Now
- Check on neighbors: Particularly the elderly or those without heat, to ensure they have proper clothing and shelter.
- Donate to shelters: Support organizations that provide direct aid to homeless individuals, especially in areas experiencing severe cold.
- Raise awareness: Share information about frostbite, its symptoms, and how to prevent it.
The Bigger Picture
The cold crisis is a sobering reminder that climate change affects us all in unexpected ways. Frostbite and amputations among the homeless in places like Manitoba illustrate the cruel reality of extreme weather events. It’s not just about warming—it’s about the destabilization of the systems we rely on to keep us safe.
We must act now to protect vulnerable populations from the ravages of climate change, whether through advocacy, education, or direct action. Together, we can prevent needless suffering and ensure that no one is left out in the cold.

We Can Change the World:
We Can Change the World: Learning from the Past to Fight Injustice
In 1968, the Democratic National Convention protests sparked one of the most infamous trials in U.S. history. The Chicago Seven trial, immortalized in the film The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020), revealed the deep racism, oppression, and injustice embedded in the American judicial system. One of the most shocking moments was the treatment of Bobby Seale, co-founder of the Black Panther Party, who was bound and gagged in a courtroom—a horrifying symbol of silencing dissent and dehumanizing people of color.
Chicago’s song “Dialogue (Part I & II)” perfectly captures the spirit of resistance and hope during those turbulent times. Its lyrics are a reminder that change is possible, but only if we stand united:
Lyrics: "Dialogue (Part I & II)" by Chicago
Are you optimistic 'bout the way things are going?
No, I never ever think of it at all
*Don't you ever worry when you see what's going down
A Clip from Movie

Rockets, Resources, and Responsibility: The Cost of “Progress”
The recent explosion of Elon Musk’s Starship rocket highlights more than just the risks of space exploration. It underscores the staggering cost of such endeavors and the ethical questions they raise when compared to the humanitarian crises we face right here on Earth.
Estimates suggest that the cost of a single Starship launch ranges from $2 to $10 billion, depending on its mission. Imagine what those funds could achieve if redirected toward solving the urgent problems that affect millions every day:
1. Housing: With homelessness surging across North America, the funds from just one failed rocket launch could build thousands of affordable housing units. In British Columbia alone, where the housing crisis is critical, this money could transform lives, providing stability and dignity to countless families.
2. Food Security: Global hunger remains a pressing issue, with millions relying on food banks to survive. A fraction of these billions could establish sustainable food programs, community gardens, and innovative farming solutions to ensure no one goes to bed hungry.
3. Healthcare and Education: Addressing basic healthcare and educational needs could empower generations, breaking the cycle of poverty and creating a world where everyone has the chance to thrive.
While technological advancements like SpaceX’s aim to benefit humanity in the long term, they come at an enormous cost. We’re pouring billions into projects that may never succeed, while the most basic needs of people on this planet go unmet. Shouldn’t humanity prioritize alleviating present suffering before reaching for the stars?
The Ants Analogy
Think of humanity as ants on the surface of Mother Earth. We’re small, yet our relentless activity—building, consuming, and polluting—is overwhelming her. Like when you leave a sticky spoon on the table and return to find it swarmed with ants, Earth has grown tired of our incessant disruption.
What do you do when faced with that scene? Most of us grab a bucket of water and wash the ants away—it’s the fastest, simplest solution. Mother Earth is doing the same. Through floods, fires, hurricanes, and other natural disasters, she’s reclaiming her space, resetting the balance we’ve upset.
But here’s the difference: We are intelligent ants. We have the ability to see what’s happening and choose a different path. Rather than racing to “progress” at all costs, we can work together to build a sustainable future—one where everyone has a home, enough to eat, and access to opportunities.
It’s not too late to listen to Earth’s warnings. If we unite, focusing our resources on healing and collaboration, we can stop being a nuisance and start being stewards. The choice is ours: keep pushing until Mother Earth wipes us away or pause, rethink, and work together to create a world where everyone, including Earth herself, can thrive.

The Power of Language: Preserving Our Ancestral Voices
Language is more than just a means of communication; it’s the essence of a culture, a way of sharing stories, traditions, and wisdom passed down through generations. When a language dies, so does a piece of its people's identity, history, and connection to the land. This is especially true for Indigenous languages, which have been systematically suppressed and replaced by colonial languages. The loss of these languages is a painful reality that continues to affect many communities, including my own.
I recently began exploring my Songhees ancestry and encountered the difficulty of finding resources on the Songhees language. While the Songhees language, a Coast Salish dialect, isn’t entirely extinct, it is endangered, and finding fluent speakers is a challenge. Like many Indigenous communities across Canada and beyond, the Songhees Nation is working hard to revitalize its language, but the path to reclamation is steep, especially after years of suppression.
I’ve always been passionate about languages. In school, I was introduced to French, which we learned as early as grade 2 and continued through high school. Yet, despite years of study, I could never retain it. I hated it. But my interest in Spanish grew, especially after spending time in Mexico. I wanted to speak Spanish fluently, but the college I attended only offered French, so I took two years of French, hoping the exposure to a new language would help me. Still, I found it hard to grasp and retain, and despite spending time in Mexico, my Spanish is still not where I want it to be.
When I think about languages, particularly the Indigenous languages that are at risk of being lost, I realize how important it is to immerse yourself in the language for it to truly become a part of you. As I reflect on my personal struggles with language, I see how much harder it must be for communities to reclaim their languages after centuries of forced assimilation and displacement.
In Oaxaca, where I’ve spent time, there is an Indigenous language with a similar fate—close to extinction. I had hopes of moving off-grid to live in a community that was working to preserve this language. I wanted to immerse myself in the culture and language, helping to keep it alive and pass it on to the next generation. Sadly, my friend, who had invited me to this journey, passed away, and now those plans are uncertain.
Language preservation and revitalization are critical for healing, empowerment, and reclaiming one’s identity. Whether it’s the Songhees language of Vancouver Island, the Indigenous languages of Oaxaca, or any other language facing extinction, we must understand the urgency in preserving and revitalizing these languages. By learning these languages, we honor the ancestors who spoke them, and we ensure that the stories, knowledge, and traditions they carry are passed down to future generations.
I may not speak Songhees or Spanish fluently yet, but I’m committed to learning. It’s a lifelong journey, and it’s one that requires patience, immersion, and community. It’s not easy, but it’s necessary.
If you’re passionate about language preservation, whether it’s your own ancestral tongue or a language that interests you, there are resources and communities working to keep them alive. Getting involved, learning, and supporting Indigenous language revitalization efforts is one of the most powerful ways to make a difference.
We must remember: language is not just words—it’s culture, connection, and identity. Let’s ensure that the voices of our ancestors continue to be heard.
When Humanity Fails: Reflecting on Recent Acts of Violence and the Bystander Effect
Recent events, like the tragic attack on Debrina Kawam in New York and similar violent incidents worldwide, force us to confront an uncomfortable question: what is happening to our humanity?
The Unthinkable in New York
In a horrifying incident, Debrina Kawam lost her life when she was set on fire in a subway car, with bystanders either failing to act or choosing to record the event rather than intervene. This tragedy exposes a troubling disconnect in how we respond to others' suffering, amplified by what psychologists call the "bystander effect."
Closer to Home: The Vancouver Incident
In Vancouver, Dane Cameron was deliberately set on fire in a similarly shocking act of violence. Despite being treated in the hospital, he was released only to collapse and require further care. These stories, while unique in circumstances, share a common thread: they reflect the fragility of our collective empathy in the face of growing societal challenges.
What Is the Bystander Effect?
The bystander effect occurs when individuals in a group hesitate to intervene in an emergency, often assuming someone else will act. Fear of personal harm, legal repercussions, or even the shock of witnessing violence can paralyze us.
In Debrina’s case, this phenomenon was starkly visible, with reports suggesting that even trained professionals present hesitated. Similarly, Dane’s tragedy reminds us how systemic issues—such as strained healthcare systems—compound individual suffering.
Why Are We So Disconnected?
The rise of social media has also changed how we engage with crises. The instinct to document rather than assist reflects a culture where views and likes often outweigh direct action. But these platforms also present opportunities to spark critical conversations about societal issues like violence, systemic failures, and the lack of communal support.
A Call to Action
The Changerz movement is about more than just raising awareness. It’s about fostering resilience, creating meaningful connections, and inspiring others to take action. These heartbreaking incidents are reminders of why we must stand together as communities.
Educate yourself: Learn about the bystander effect and how to overcome it. Be prepared to act in emergencies—whether by calling for help, intervening safely, or finding ways to de-escalate situations.
Advocate for systemic changes: Push for better safety measures in public spaces. For instance, New York subways lack accessible fire extinguishers, which might have saved Debrina.
Cultivate empathy: Start small. Check on a neighbor, lend a hand to someone in distress, or simply listen to those who feel unheard.
Hope for Change
At The Changerz, we believe in the power of storytelling to inspire reflection and change. These stories are not just tragedies; they are calls to reclaim our humanity, to look inward and ask, “How can I make a difference?”
The world feels heavy right now, but it’s through these moments of darkness that we can ignite the spark of change. Let’s honor the victims of these tragedies by working towards a future where such events are not met with indifference but with compassion and action.
A World of Hope: 10 Signs of Positive Change
As the world feels heavy at times, it's important to step back and recognize the incredible progress being made globally. While local challenges might cloud our perspective, there’s undeniable hope in the positive changes happening around the world. Here are 10 areas where humanity is moving forward—and where we can find inspiration.
1. Renewable Energy Growth
Renewable energy has come a long way in the past decade. Solar and wind power are now the cheapest energy sources in many places, with countries like Denmark and Costa Rica leading the charge in clean energy production. Could Vancouver Burn Like LA? A Reflection on Fire, Greed, and Our City’s Future
It’s a question I’ve heard whispered and now boldly voiced in headlines: Could Vancouver face catastrophic fires like Los Angeles? The answer is simple yet terrifying—yes, easily. This fear has lingered in my mind for years, unspoken but persistent, and recent events have only amplified it.
Wildfires are no stranger to BC. I know this firsthand. I moved from Nelson because a fire came dangerously close, and my mom faced serious air quality issues during her time in Kelowna. The summers in Vancouver often bring the same choking air. The skies turn grey, the sun a hazy orange, and breathing becomes a struggle. I get headaches and sinus issues when the smoke rolls in, and for many, it’s much worse.
Even within the city, we’ve seen fires threaten our parks and communities. Stanley Park, with its lush greenery, is a prime example of a space at risk. Beyond the trees, many vulnerable people live in the parks—those with nowhere else to go. In the event of a major fire, what happens to them? Where do they go when they’ve already been left behind?
And then there’s the architecture of our city. Vancouver is known for its stunning, historic wooden buildings, many of which are homes and businesses that embody the city’s rich character. These buildings are beautiful, but they are also highly flammable. Meanwhile, we see more and more steel, cement, and glass towers rising, marketed as symbols of modern progress. But are they truly safer?
The truth is, no structure is indestructible. Fires can gut steel buildings, earthquakes can bring down towers, and flooding can render even the most sophisticated infrastructure unlivable. What concerns me most is the underlying greed that seems to guide these developments. If a catastrophic fire swept through Vancouver, would it pave the way for developers to come in and build more towers? Would it be another excuse to displace those who can’t afford to stay?
As the risks grow, we need to ask tough questions:
Are we doing enough to prevent fires in urban forests and protect vulnerable communities?
How can we ensure that rebuilding efforts prioritize affordable housing and sustainability over profit?
Are we prepared for the cascading effects of climate change—fires, floods, and earthquakes—that threaten our city’s future?
We can’t let fear paralyze us, but we also can’t ignore it. It’s time to demand accountability from developers and governments. We need real solutions to make Vancouver a city that’s safe, inclusive, and resilient—not just for the wealthy, but for everyone who calls this place home.
What are your thoughts? How can we protect our city and its people from the threats we face? Share your ideas in the comments below. Let’s start the conversation.
Pipelines, Power, and the Cost of Ignoring BC's Voice
The expansion of the Trans Mountain Pipeline has caused immense grief and division across British Columbia, highlighting a stark truth: our province’s voice is being drowned out by a system that prioritizes profits over people and the planet.
For years, BC residents, Indigenous communities, and environmental advocates have worked tirelessly to oppose the pipeline. We’ve marched, raised awareness, and even taken legal action, only to see it pushed through by governments determined to double down on fossil fuels. The cost? A fractured society, environmental risks, skyrocketing living costs, and deepening economic inequality.
The True Cost of the Pipeline
While Alberta’s oil sands may benefit from the pipeline expansion, BC shoulders a heavy and unfair burden. The effects ripple far beyond the environmental risks:
Skyrocketing Housing Costs: Towns like Hope, Kamloops, and other communities along the pipeline route have seen rents and housing prices soar due to the influx of temporary pipeline workers and speculation. This is driving out locals who are already struggling with BC’s housing crisis, leaving many without affordable options.
Environmental Risks: The risk of a catastrophic oil spill on BC’s pristine coastline is a constant threat, putting marine ecosystems, wildlife, and local industries—like fishing and tourism—at risk. Even the pipeline itself disrupts fragile ecosystems, waterways, and forests.
Indigenous Rights Violated: Despite federal claims of reconciliation, many Indigenous nations have been ignored or pressured into compliance. The pipeline expansion cuts through unceded territories, disregarding their rights and stewardship over the land.
Traffic and Noise Pollution: Pipeline construction and related activities have disrupted quiet communities, increasing traffic, noise, and stress levels for residents along the route.
Economic Inequality: While Alberta may reap short-term economic benefits, BC communities bear the brunt of long-term consequences, with little to no compensation for the damage done.
This is not just about a pipeline. It’s about the deeper struggles we face as a society—choosing between short-term economic gain and long-term sustainability, between centralized power and regional voices.
Why Alberta Needs BC
The irony is stark: Alberta depends on BC’s coast to ship its oil to global markets. Yet instead of collaborating, Alberta and federal authorities have steamrolled BC’s opposition, creating resentment that feels like exploitation.
This imbalance is fueling tensions between provinces and even sparking discussions about BC separating from Canada. Many in BC feel betrayed, forced to accept risks and sacrifices to enable Alberta’s fossil fuel industry.
The Bigger Picture
The pipeline expansion highlights Canada’s broader problem: the prioritization of fossil fuels and corporate profits over sustainability, social justice, and regional autonomy. Climate change is accelerating, and yet we continue investing in infrastructure that ties us to an outdated and harmful energy system.
A Call for Change
This fight isn’t over. Here’s how we can move forward:
1. Support Local Communities: Amplify the voices of those directly impacted by pipeline projects, from small-town residents to Indigenous leaders.
2. Demand a Just Transition: Advocate for renewable energy and green infrastructure that can create jobs without destroying ecosystems or displacing people.
3. Protect BC’s Autonomy: Push for greater provincial control over environmental policies and development decisions
4. Hold Governments Accountable: Demand transparency and accountability from both provincial and federal governments regarding the long-term impacts of these projects.
Our province is not a sacrifice zone, and our communities are not collateral damage for someone else’s profit. The pipeline may have been forced through, but our resolve to fight for a better future remains unbroken.
Let’s keep talking, organizing, and pushing for change. Together, we can turn grief into action and ensure BC’s voice is not only heard but heeded.
